Q - I understand I have been entered in this race as a team. I am wondering if it is possible to do the whole race as an individual and be in a team at the same time, with my team mate tagging off me at the appropriate transition point?
Regards Jane
A - Yes you can carry out as planned, but for your plan to work the rider taking the part in both classes would need to start the event at Clyde and carry two race numbers. At the transition, where ever you plan it, the 2nd team member would remove their ride number and both of you would carry on independently.  From there on the solo rider could carry on and continue solo or continue to another transition as part of another team.

Q - My Dad and I are interested in doing the Rail Trail Classic as a team of 2. Would we be able to alternate 40km sections or would we have to do the total 80km each continuously?
Thanks - Laura C.
A - The event has been designed to encourage teams to transition at points approx 40km apart, so yes you can indeed take part as planned. You can transition every km if you really want to, but the 40km locations are strategically located where we will have fresh water and a toilet available and plenty of parking for your team / support.

Q - Hi there! As we do not want to introduce any new foods to our diet during the ride that may disagree with us, could you please give an indication of what may be included in the cut lunch. We can then train with that in mind so there's no upset tummies on the day! Thanks very much,
Terry S.
A - Hi Terry. The supplied lunch comprises one filled roll, fruit drink, Moro or similar and a piece of fruit.

Q - I have a question on this event. Can you give us an idea of the surface of the trail at the moment, is it hard packed or loose gravel. This way we can concentrate on the right sort of surface for our last few training rides. Thanks Martin (Team Wyatt & Wilson Print)
A - Hi Martin. We looked over the trail a few weeks back. It appears to be fairly hard packed dirt, but we saw sections that had recently been dug up and re-laid. There is a 500M section coming into Oturehua that has been soft on every ride Ive been on. Central Otago is coming out of Winter, frost heave may effect some sections. Remember that the summer heat is still a few months away so I expect soft patches in places.

Q - On the rail trail race, are you having transport for riders back to their vehicles from the finish to the start. And had you thought about a tandem class, keen to enter or would we be a mixed team.
Thanks Karen M.
A - Thanks Karen, yes there is now a class for Tandems. For return transport to Clyde, please contact Dave Thompson at Billy's Holiday Camp,enquiries@middlemarch-motels.co.nz

Q - Was just wondering if you had thought of a Clydesdale category for people 100kg and over? Gives us thick set people something to aim for while the light weights disappear into the distance! Cheers, Chris.
A - Thanks Chris, at the meeting tonight we discussed and approved your idea, it has been added as a race category.

Q - Sorry perhaps I have not read all the small print but can you tell me exactly how long the race is and can we have a team of 3 members each doing a section of it. Thanks Philippa
A - Thanks for the question. The ride is 152.17km long, divided into approx four, 40km stages. If I read your 2nd question correctly, you can have any number in your team, but with three - one person will need to ride two sections to complete the ride.

Q - I am planning to enter two Corporate Teams into the event.
However, in one of the teams all four riders want to ride the complete distance, does this still come under the team category or do we have to enter this team as individuals? The other team of four will be doing the event as a relay. Also, did this event run last year, and if so what was the average mid field time? Thanks Martin.
A - Well, that's an interesting one, but I cant see any problem with the Team whose individuals also want to ride the full distance. The event did not run last year. We hoped to run it in March 2007 but delays forced its postponement. Average time for moderately fit occasional cyclists is 8.5hrs.

Q - Hi there. Is it possible for one person to enter as an individual and be part of a team? I.e. Do first leg for team, then continue own race etc. Thanks Emma
A - Hi Emma, we are real flexible on this event, cant see any problems with your plan. But the first rider will need to carry two numbers and pay two entries, one for their solo effort, one as a team member.

Q - Hi there. I love the fact that your event has a Clydesdale category. I totally agree with Chris (4 questions above), that is it really hard as a bigger person to ever get a placing when you are racing against people who are 20kg lighter! My question is, does the Clydesdale category apply to women too, and if so, can it be made a little more realistic and dropped to 80kg for women? Being an 80kg woman I am sure is the equivalent to a 100kg man. I am entering your race and am between 80-100kg's and think it might give me something to aim for. I have been racing in multisport events for 6 years and never even had a placing because all the 60kg girls are off into the distance before I am even clipped into my pedals! Your thoughts on this would be interesting.
A - Seems like a reasonable request, you'll need to prove you are of the fairer sex though, can't have males cross dressing in the hope gaining a top 3 podium finish. ;-)

Q - Hi there. Just a query re the race on 27th September. We have signed up as a team of 4 to tackle the the race and just really wanted to confirm the stages and the kilometres per stage. If this is correct then bugger to the one doing the second stage......lol. many thanks for your time. Bronwyn
A - The Marshall cut-off times are...
Clyde to Omakau 37km, Omakau Cut-off time 10:30am
Omakau to Wedderburn 40km, Wedderburn Cut-off time 12:30pm
Wedderburn to Ranfurly 35km, Ranfurly Cut-off time 2pm
Ranfurly to Hyde 32km, Hyde Cut-off time 4pm
Hyde to Middlemarch 27km, Cut-off time 6pm - event closes.
If you cannot make it to these locations, you will need the assistance of your support team.
Please note - there is NO SWEEP VEHICLE on this event.

Q - Hi, are you planning on having anywhere we can register on Sat night, its going to be an early start Sunday, especially as is the first day of daylight savings, so registering the night before would be great. You will be busy trying to get all of us registered in the half hour you have allowed. It would also give us time to warm up before the race start. Thanks Karen
A - Hi Karen, briefly, officials travel up on Saturday evening, so registration the night before isn't feasible. We will be there 6:30am Sunday morning to get you to sign on for this event.
